On The Eve of a New Year

Today is New Year’s Eve and as I sit here in my pajamas at 1:30 p.m., I feel a smile creep across my face. In years past, I definitely would have felt guilty for doing nothing; the voice inside my head would be saying: “Get dressed, get moving, go, go, go!!” But today, as I look ahead to 2011, I feel joy. I feel peace.

Because what I know now is that a new year doesn’t mean that we can no longer mess up. And it doesn’t mean that we should make ourselves we badly if we do. I can guarantee you that, in 2011, there will be arguments, there will be tears, and there will be anger. But there is also the knowledge that using your emotional energy to express gratitude each and every day will help you to let go of the stuff that doesn’t serve you. Just this morning, after a silly argument with my loved one, I sat with my anger and realized it just didn’t serve me. I released it (like letting go of a balloon) and reminded myself that forgiveness is a step forward, not backward.

Go easy on yourself this year. If things don’t move as quickly as you’d like them to, work out the way you want them to, or if people dissapoint you, connect with yourself. Put your hand over your heart and connect with yourself when you feel as though you aren’t connecting with others. Send out love and gratitude. Ask the universe for guidance.

As Mastin Kipp from The Daily Love says: “Thinking positive thoughts only is not what I’m talking about. You can hope to see a sunrise, but if you stand facing west, no matter how many positive thoughts you think, you won’t see the sun rise.” So point yourself in the right direction, starting now. If people or things or thoughts derail you from your direction…stop, sit, and be silent. Breathe and get back on track. Because this year is about you finding peace within. Every. Single. Day.
